Henrico Doctors’ Hospital offers TAVR, an alternative to open heart surgery

open heart surgeryRichmond’s most experienced heart team was the first team in Central Virginia to offer Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). As an alternative to traditional open heart surgery, TAVR is a non-surgical, minimally-invasive procedure offered to patients with heart valve disease and is only available to the top heart teams in America. A multi-disciplinary team of interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and staff from the OR, Cath Lab, CT and ECHO currently perform the procedure on heart valve replacement patients who are too sick for open heart surgery.

“Goodbye Heart Disease/Hello Life”

Dr. Charles Phillips said that heart valve disease “continues to be a significant problem and TAVR is a great way to treat these patients. The results overall have been very gratifying.”

Dr. Thomas Christopher said that he was pleased that patients in the past who were not candidates for open heart surgery are now enjoying a better life because of the procedure. Dr. Charles Zacharias added that “it started with inoperative patients but now we can treat patients who are less high risk and the procedure has become less invasive.”

The team of TAVR physicians have worked closely with Edwards Lifesciences , the creator of TAVR, to continue to stay on the cutting edge of advancements in cardiovascular healthcare.“Of all the technology advances, this one is the greatest gain a patient can experience with less risk,” said Dr. Chiwon Hahn.
